About Passphrase Generator
A passphrase of five or six random words is as hard to guess as a long random password, but much easier to remember and type: ideal for a password manager's master password or your computer login.
Words are drawn from the EFF's 7,776-word list, designed to be easy to spell and hard to confuse, using your browser's secure random generator. Nothing is sent or stored.
Create a strong password in one click: choose the length and which characters to use, or switch to a passphrase of random words that's easier to remember. The strength meter shows how long it would take to guess.
Passwords are generated in your browser with its cryptographically secure random number generator. They're never sent over the internet, stored or logged, by us or anyone else.
How to use Passphrase Generator
- 1Choose a password or a passphrase.
- 2Set the length and the characters, or the number of words.
- 3Copy it, and save it in your password manager.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to generate a password on a website?
Only if the website never sees it. This one makes passwords in your browser, so they're never sent over the internet or stored anywhere. You can even disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.
How long should a password be?
At least 16 characters with letters, digits and symbols, or a passphrase of five or more words. Use a different password for every site, and let a password manager remember them.
Password or passphrase?
Both can be very strong. Use a random password when a password manager fills it in for you, and a passphrase for the few you have to type or remember.
What does “avoid look-alikes” do?
It leaves out characters that are easy to confuse, such as I, l, 1, O and 0, which helps when you have to read a password out or type it by hand.
