About Hash Generator

Get the MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of any text or file at once. Hashes are used to check that files weren't changed, to compare data, and in many developer tasks.

Files of any size are hashed in your browser in small pieces, so even large disk images work and nothing is uploaded. Paste an expected checksum to see whether it matches.

How to use Hash Generator

  1. 1Choose Text or File.
  2. 2Type or paste text, or pick a file.
  3. 3Copy a hash, or paste a published checksum to compare.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. Hashing runs in your browser, so your text and files never leave your device, even large ones.

Which hash should I use?

Use SHA-256 unless something specific asks for another. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for spotting accidental changes, but they're broken for security, because attackers can create different files with the same hash.

Why doesn't my checksum match?

Either the file is different (an incomplete download, a different version or a tampered copy), or the checksum is for another algorithm. The comparison tells you which algorithm's length it matches.

Can I hash a password here?

You can, but don't store passwords as plain MD5 or SHA hashes: they're too fast to guess. Use a password hashing algorithm such as Argon2 or bcrypt instead.
